UAE Green Visa for Freelancers: Dubai Requirements and Fees

1. Confirm that the freelancer Green Residence fits your work arrangement

ICP lists freelancers and self-employed people as a distinct Green Residence category. The residence is valid for five years, can be renewed when the requirements continue to be met, and does not require a sponsor inside the UAE. GDRFA Dubai describes the self-employment route as independent residence without a guarantor, employer or employment contract, whether the applicant is inside or outside the country. This route is not interchangeable with every product commonly called a Dubai freelance visa. A free-zone permit, a commercial licence and the virtual-work residence route can involve different authorities and conditions. Start by confirming that the exact service shown in your official account is Green Residence for self-employment and that the issuing authority responsible for your file is GDRFA Dubai or ICP, as applicable.

2. Obtain the required MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit

Both the ICP Green Residence guide and the GDRFA Dubai service card require a freelance work permit or self-employment permit issued by MOHRE. GDRFA lists this permit as both a requirement and a condition of the residence service. The Green Residence application does not itself create that work permit. Check the permit type, holder name, activity and validity before starting the residence request. Do not substitute an informal client agreement, portfolio, overseas company registration or free-zone document unless the live authority workflow expressly accepts it for this category. If your activity is regulated or your permit was issued through a different authority, ask MOHRE and the residence authority which route applies before paying.

3. Match the education and financial evidence to the published tests

The published education condition is at least a bachelor's degree, specialised diploma or equivalent. The financial condition is stated as annual self-employment income for the preceding two years of at least AED 360,000 or the equivalent in foreign currency, or proof of financial solvency throughout the stay in the UAE. The authority decides whether the documents establish the condition; the public pages do not promise that one bank balance or one invoice will be sufficient. Prepare consistent evidence covering the period and route you rely on. This may include authority-requested income records, bank statements, contracts, invoices, tax records or other proof shown in the live application. Make sure names, currencies, dates and totals can be reconciled. Do not convert the AED threshold using an old exchange rate, and do not describe projected income as completed historical income. If relying on solvency rather than the income threshold, ask the authority what current evidence and coverage period it requires.

4. Prepare the core documents and use the correct Dubai channel

GDRFA Dubai currently lists a passport copy with at least six months' validity and the MOHRE self-employment permit as service requirements. The category conditions add the education and financial evidence. The live application may request a personal photo, health insurance, medical-fitness evidence, identity data or other records needed for residence issuance, especially when information cannot be retrieved electronically. Follow the actual fields shown for your file. GDRFA lists its website or smart application, Customer Happiness Centres and Amer Service Centres. For a digital request, log in with UAE Pass or the authorised username, find the self-employment Green Residence service, complete the retrieved data, attach requested documents and pay the displayed amount. If an adviser or centre files for you, keep the official application number and verify that your own details and selected category are correct.

5. Read the Dubai fee lines separately and avoid inventing one total

The GDRFA Dubai service card currently publishes an AED 200 residence-permit fee, AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham, AED 500 inside-country fee when applicable and AED 20 delivery. It also states that the issuance fee increases by AED 100 annually when the residence is longer than two years. Because the service is a five-year residence and applicability can depend on the file and channel, use the live payment screen or Amer quotation instead of calculating a universal total from the public list. Work-permit, medical-fitness, Emirates ID, insurance, typing-centre, status-change and professional-service charges may be separate transactions. Do not merge them into the residence-service price without an itemised authority record. Save the fee breakdown and receipt, and confirm refund or reapplication rules before paying again if a request is returned or cancelled.

6. Treat benefits, grace periods and processing times as conditional

ICP describes Green Residence as renewable for five years, sponsor-free and able to support family sponsorship according to the approved requirements. GDRFA Dubai currently states a 180-day grace period inside the UAE after expiry or cancellation for this self-employment service. Neither point removes the need for separate eligible dependent applications or permission to work in a regulated activity. GDRFA publishes 48 hours as the expected completion time. This is not a guaranteed approval time and should not be used to promise a start date, travel date or client commitment. Monitor authority messages, respond to document requests, and verify the issued residence details in the official record before relying on the outcome.
