Dubai Residence Visa Cancellation: Steps, Fees and Grace Period

Start with the correct cancellation sequence

Residence-permit cancellation is different from cancelling an unused entry permit. Normally the sponsor submits the residence request. For a mainland private-sector employee, the employer generally completes MOHRE work-permit and employment-contract cancellation first. If the residence sponsor has family dependants, their permits normally need to be cancelled first or placed on hold where the authority allows it. Employer disputes, a sponsor’s death, domestic-worker cases and cancellation while outside the UAE can follow separate procedures, so do not force them into the standard route.

Dubai documents, channels, charges and timing

GDRFA Dubai’s current cancellation service lists the sponsor’s passport, the sponsored person’s passport and, for a private-sector employee, a MOHRE work-permit cancellation extract. The request can be submitted digitally with UAE Pass or a username, or through an Amer centre. The service card lists AED 100 for cancellation plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham, with an expected completion time of 48 hours. These are the authority’s published service figures, not a guaranteed end-to-end total or approval time; channel, case and missing-document charges can differ.

Verify the grace period for your exact category

ICP’s federal service guidance publishes category-based periods after residence cancellation or expiry: 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their families, widows or divorced women of residents, students after completing studies, and foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens; 90 days for skilled workers in occupational levels 1–3 and property owners; 60 days for permits issued with a guarantor or host; and 30 days for other categories. GDRFA Dubai’s generic cancellation card states 60 days, while some Dubai residence categories publish different periods. Do not assume that one number applies to everyone. Ask GDRFA Dubai to confirm the deadline recorded for your permit.

What cancellation changes—and what it does not

ICP’s workflow cancels the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID. A grace period may allow lawful stay, but it does not by itself authorise work for a new employer. MOHRE says a worker must not work for another employer without the required permit. ICP lists an overstay fine of AED 50 per day starting on the day after the applicable grace period ends. Keep the official cancellation confirmation and do not calculate your last legal day from an article alone.

Save the cancellation receipt and confirmation, note the effective cancellation date and check the updated file through the issuing authority. Confirm the exact grace-period deadline directly with GDRFA Dubai for a Dubai-issued residence. Then complete an eligible new residence or status process, where permitted, or leave the UAE before that verified deadline. Check for recorded fines and make sure any new work starts only after the required authorisation is active. Visa rules and service details can change, so recheck the official pages before acting.
